2024 Annual Legislative Event

This message is to update everyone on our recent meeting at the Community College League of California 2024 Annual Legislative Conference in Sacramento. Excitement in our caucus continues to grow as more members pay their dues and participate in our meetings. This caucus meeting included important presentations and updates from our various committees. Below is a brief summary of each:

Legislative

This committee has met multiple times to discuss how to define and position CALCCTA’s legislative agenda for success. At the caucus meeting, Andrea Wittig from Cerritos College provided an update. The committee has created a formal process by which legislative action and support from CALCCTA can be submitted to the executive board for approval. A sample form is attached to this email, which any member can fill out and submit for review. Upon approval from the executive committee, talking points will be created and distributed to all members for support from the caucus.

Membership

Committee lead and executive board member, Margaret Quiñones-Perez from Santa Monica College, provided an update on the financial status of CALCCTA’s account. Trustee Quiñones-Perez also discussed the importance of following up and paying membership dues to provide better resources and experiences for members.

Communications

Committee co-lead Michael Mejia from Ramirez & Co., Inc., provided a preliminary analysis of our statewide survey. Preliminary analysis of member feedback includes the following guidance:

1) Members expressed a desire for more info on events and legislative actions, as well as more communication.
2) Members expressed a lack of engagement due to unclear mission, accomplishments, and leadership opportunities within CALCCTA.
3) A need for better regional representation throughout California. Each region may have different priorities, and the regions may feel detached because CALCCTA may not be addressing their specific concerns.
